Is that a real thing? Who knows?! But that’s how I describe the style of our home. My love of the water and beachy things runs deep and began at a very young age.

When my parents were first married, they lived in a gold colored Airstream, with a light wood interior and a pink bathtub! In the mid 1970s, my parents and grandparents built an addition to that amazing little Airstream. And it gained new life as a small family cabin on an unassuming lake in the middle of Nebraska.

I have many wonderful memories of spending time with family there. Early overcast, misty mornings eating breakfast on a boat while my grandfather fished. Being thrown from a torpedo pulled behind my uncle’s boat. The feel of the soft, wet sand between my toes, as the waves roll in and out. Or all the cousins around a picnic table eating s’more by the light of the fire.

I can still smell the familiar scent of sea grass mats that we would lay on at the beach so we didn’t get sand in our snacks. As we grew older my grandma would take a couple of cousins at a time, to spend the weekend with her at the cabin.

Some time ago, that little cabin was sold. And unfortunately torn down by the new owners. But my life has been forever touched by it and it lives on in the memories and in the way I choose to decorate our home.

What is Beachy Farmhouse Design?

What I refer to as Beachy Farmhouse is a fusion of coastal and rustic elements, combining the best of both styles. Our house is very casual, giving off that sun-kissed feel of coastal warmth, with a bit of the character of Farmhouse aesthetic. Think light and airy with distressed wood and ocean inspired hues.

Key Elements of Beachy Farmhouse Design

1.Coastal Inspired Color Palette: ●Whites and Creams- A bright fresh base keeps the space feeling open. ●Soft blues and Aquas- Evoking the hues of the ocean. ●Sandy Beige and Taupes- Bring in natural warmth. ●Driftwood Grays- Adding subtle contrast and depth.

2. Natural Materials and Textures: ●Weathered or Whitewashed woods used in furniture, frames, or accent decor such as baskets. ● Natural fabrics such as linen or cotton for curtains, slip covers or throw pillows for a soft breezy feel. ● Jute and Seagrass used in rugs, baskets, and accent decor for texture.

3. Rustic Farmhouse Touches: Shiplap is a staple in farmhouse design that pairs well with coastal decor. ●Wicker or Distressed vintage furniture such as tables, buffets, and cabinets add character. ●Open shelving for displaying beachy decor such as glass bottles, shells, or driftwood. ● Sliding barn doors are a farmhouse favorite that can be adapted to Beachy decor with a light stain or ocean inspired paint color.

4. Light and Airy Spaces: Opt for sheer or linen curtains that let in plenty of natural light. ● Lighter colored flooring lends itself well to Beachy decor. ●Keep furniture and clutter to a minimum to maintain an open feel.

5. Coastal Inspired Accents: Glass bottles or vases, especially in green or aqua colors give a subtle beach vibe. ●Driftwood and woven baskets for a natural, rustic charm. ●Nautical rope detail can be used in mirrors, light fixtures or decor pieces. ●Soft blues and stripes for pillows and upholstery.
